Application Guide Waterproofing

How to waterproof a bathroom

In a bathroom, tiles and grout are not waterproofing on their own. A reliable solution is formed by a load-bearing substrate, corner and penetration details, a continuous waterproofing layer, a suitable tile adhesive and a grout suited to the conditions of use working together.

Waterproofing application in a bathroom

Prepare the substrate for application

The substrate must be clean, sound, flat and able to carry the covering. Dust, oil and weak layers are removed; cracks and voids are made good with a suitable repair system. The fall towards the drain is checked before waterproofing. If a primer is required, a product suited to the substrate type is chosen; the same primer is not applied to every substrate.

Resolve the corner, pipe and drain details

The weak points in waterproofing are mostly wall-floor junctions, internal and external corners, pipe penetrations and the area around the drain. Suitable KR-JTK waterproofing detail accessories are used in these areas. Tapes and collars must form a continuous, unbroken whole with the main waterproofing layer.

Apply the fully flexible waterproofing system

KR-5100 is used together with KR-5100-2 in the grey system, and KR-5150 with KR-5150-2 in the white system. The component ratio, number of coats, application direction, waiting time between coats and total curing time are applied according to the information in the current technical data sheet. No gaps must be left at corners or around the drain.

Complete the tile and grout layer

Once the waterproofing is ready to accept a covering, the tiles are fixed with KR-8000 in the grey system and KR-8500 where white is required. For large formats, double-sided application and levelling are used. The main bathroom grout is KR-250 FUGA KRAFT POOL. Where there are high chemical or special hygiene requirements, KR-300 FUGA KRAFT EPOXY is considered.

Water test and use

The water test and the time at which the system is put into use are planned according to the technical data sheets of the chosen products and the project conditions. Early exposure to water can put the performance of the layers at risk.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does grout replace waterproofing?

No. Grout does not replace the continuous waterproofing layer beneath the tiles.

Is corner tape necessary?

A suitable KR-JTK accessory must be used so that corner and penetration details integrate with the main waterproofing.

Which grout is recommended in a bathroom?

The main option is KR-250; under special technical and chemical loads, KR-300.
